All my mum’s roses are blooming away. She’s got one absolutely spectacular variety that has the deepest red flowers and they flower in bunches at the top of the stems. These clusters of flowers are so dense that, despite pruning back last autumn, they’ve pulled the stems to the ground, much to the delight of the slugs. Much to my horror, our hens love to eat those slugs. I try to put that fact far into the back of my mind when I’m collecting the eggs for lunch/dinner.

Before the stems bowed to the density of the roses, they would bob against the kitchen window, which was wonderful when you’d pass by in the sun of the day. But a touch scary when I went to mum’s kitchen to get something for my sister one night, she was down from Dublin, and I saw this big blob of ‘black’ things nodding at the kitchen window.

Dublin Girl nearly wet herself laughing. I nearly gave myself a heart attack. I’m probably the only person who has been scared of a bunch of flowers. I laugh now but beware of the clustered rose. It’s beautiful by day, by night it can petrify! Here’s a picture of them. Wonder will mum recognise her flowers online?

I was looking at glass houses for my mum (and myself if I’m honest!) a few weeks ago in a great place in Tullamore and darn nearly bought one, there and then. The one we liked on initial inspection, of course, turned out to be 7 grand so we quick stepped it to the ones that fit out budget slightly better.

A wonderful French gent there told us about the whys and whats that we should consider when buying a glass house and it was then that he mentioned that the company would be at the Bloom in the Park Flower Festival in the Phoenix Park in Dublin and there would be, cha ching, discounts of between 10 and 20% for purchases on the day. That’s a lot if you’re buying a glass house and I have the date booked in my diary and glass house catalogue tucked away safely. They’ll deliver to Dublin, Donegal, Waterford, you name it, and it’s included in the cost of the unit. I like that…

I recently discovered roses in a ditch opposite my mum’s house that belonged to a flower garden of my great grandfather. Those flowers have survived the decades, having been dug up and discarded when the house was replaced in 1965. My mother only told me of the ancestry of these roses last week and I’m already working out the best way to take cuttings for my own garden. I hope to pass the flower ‘lineage’ on to my own kids when they have their own gardens. I’m pretty sure they’ll survive being propagated, having survived the floods and the snow and frost last winter, and the many others over the years. Just to show them a little TCL we’ll start them off in the glass house. I’m like a child waiting for Christmas – waiting for the chance to get those roses planted out into my garden and to have the fragrance of flowers from generations ago wafting through my house. I feel very privileged indeed.

Mother’s Day in the USA, Australia and many other countries is just around the corner again. It’s funny how that year flies. I was in Dublin recently and sat beside a girl in a library who had ‘I mo Chroi Deo, Máthair’ inked in lettering on the cover of a pink folder and it reminded me of when I was growing up and what Mother’s Day was like for us.

My dad would always make sure that my mother got flowers and a box of Milk Tray on Mother’s Day. We all had to be quiet – that’s a big deal with seven kids running around in the house. It was a pretty big day not just for our mum. My dad was proud of our mother and liked her to know it. I think for most men it’s easier to show it than say it though. I’d say the chocolates were for the kids, mum would, maybe, get one or two. Any incoming delivery of chocolate for any occasion was normally seized upon by me and my siblings.

I’m sure my dad was a little uneasy, in those days, wandering into a shop looking at flowers and not knowing his large-headed Roses from his Germini. I wonder what he’d have made of being able to use the Internet to order his flower delivery like people do now. He was a man of few words so I think they were his way of saying everything he wanted to say, without actually having to get the words out. My mum would always utter something like ‘what did you go doing that for?’ or something similar, when he handed her the flowers, but her face could never hide a giddy delight when she would get her delivery. And we were clever enough to capitalise on this – if we asked for a trip to Dublin Zoo or cheese from the moon we’d get a ‘yes’ on that day.

So watch out for whatever gets promised this Mother’s Day to kids! I think I have a couple of years left before I succumb to the requests and I’m sure like my own mother, I’ll be full of yes’s when that day comes.
