Caring for your Flowers
To give you longer lasting flowers, following these tips will ensure that all flowers open and mature over a longer time. Flowers.ie recommends the following simple tips, based on the latest extensive scientific research, to ensure that your flowers last longer and look lovelier.
1. Make sure your vase is very clean. Bacteria will infect your flowers and curtail their ability to survive.
2. Use fresh water with flower food added. Follow the instructions on the flower food precisely. Lukewarm water is best as it has less oxygen which can airlock the tiny veins that carry water to the flower. The exception is spring flowers which prefer cooler water. Roses and Sunflowers need deep water. Freesia and Germini prefer to be in shallow water.
3. Strip any leaves from the stem which may fall below the water level. The leaves will contaminate the water.
4. Take at least 3cm (1") off all stems, making a slanted cut with a sharp knife. A slanted cut provides a larger area on the end of the stem for the water to get in.
5. Avoid direct sunlight, heat, or draughts. All of these can shorten flower life. Also keep your flowers well away from Fruit or tomatoes. They both give of a gas which damages flowers.
6. Remove faded flowers as they occur. As well as looking unsightly, they will continue to consume the resource of the stem.
7. Top up the water regularly and add flower food in proportion. It is important to follow instructions on the flowerfood packet closely. If you need more flowerfood drop in to one of our florists who will be pleased to provide another sachet.
